Il corpo di San Vitale martire, patrono di Castegnato, giunse alla parrocchiale di San Giovanni Battista alla fine del XVII secolo.
La donazione venne effettuata dal cappuccino Giocondo da Padenghe in favore del nobile Girolamo Clera, marito di orsola Clera Zadei, sorella del frate. L’atto di donazione, rogato il 15 ottobre 1685 dal notaio della Curia vescovile Pietro Vincenzo Rescatti, ricorda che il corpo santo pervenne a fra’ Giocondo dopo l’esumazione nel cimitero di San Callisto a Roma per disposizione del papa; in esso si prescrive di custodirlo nella nuova parrocchiale di Castegnato in una cassa chiusa da tre chiavi affidate al parroco, al sindaco e a Girolamo Clera. Le reliquie di San Vitale ora sono conservate in un’urna lignea settecentesca posta nell’altare dedicato alla Madonna e al martire ornato dai tredici misteri del Rosario, l’altare presenta una ricca soasa con statue in stucco raffiguranti gli evangelisti Matteo e Giovanni con tre angeli.
Alla morte di orsola Clera Zadei le reliquie passarono alla comunità di Castegnato. La devozione si è consolidata nei decenni e viene celebrata la seconda domenica di maggio ogni venticinque anni le reliquie sono portate in solenne processione lungo le vie del paese.

The body of San Vitale martyr, patron of Castegnato, got to the parish of San Giovanni Battista at the end of the XVII century. The donation was made by the Capuchin Giocondo da Padenghe to the noble
Girolamo Clera, husband of Orsola Clera Zadei, sister of the friar. The document of the donation, drawn up on 15th October 1685 at the notary of the diocesan administration Pietro Vincenzo Rescatti, says that the saint body got to fra’ Giocondo after the exhumation in the cemetery of San Callisto in Rome under the order of the pope; it was asked to preserve it in the new parish of Castegnato in a box closed by three keys entrusted to the parson, the mayor and to Girolamo Clera. The relics of San Vitale are now kept in an eighteenth century woodden urn placed in the altar dedicated to the Madonna and to the martyr. Adorned with the thirteen misteries of the Rosary, the altar has a rich frame with statues made of plaster representing the evangelists Matteo and Giovanni with three angels. At the death of Orsola Clera Zadei, the relics went to the community of Castegnato. The devotion reinforced in the decades and is celebrated the second Sunday of May. Every twenty-five years the relics are brought in solemn procession along the streets of the town.
